So the other week I went on a week trip to Barcelona to get some clips. I originally didn't want any Barcelona clips for the video as its kind of played out. But I changed my mind as I was slowly getting fed up of the English winter weather. When I got there I met up with these two dudes called Fritz and Glow. Both super nice guy. They are traveling around Europe at the moment. They made this edit.

I really want to go back and blade with them.

The best thing about winter is the night time Royal Oak sessions. Unfortunately this year that’s not happening, as the lights are broken.

I have found on the Westminster council webpage a section for reporting broken lights. I have reported it but I figured if I can get lots more people to do the same maybe they would get fixed quicker. What do you say?

Matt Watt is pretty low key for someone who has managed to pull of quite a few achievements in front of and behind the camera. I caught up with him to talk about his thoughts on filming rollerblading.

What is your current set up?

Canon XHA1 I just bought the Canon 7D, which I’m going to use for the first time today – very excited.

You have been out of the spot light for a bit, what have you been working on?

A new DVD featuring the skaters in London I roll with the likes of Julian Coulter, Leon Humphries, Neil Ingall, Matt Chilvers, Andrew Halls, Pete Bexley, James Bower, Blake Bird and occasionally I give the camera to someone to film myself.

Do you film outside of rollerblading?

Yes I have my own company called Hotmilk Films and have been working full time the last 3 years. I have filmed dozens of commercials for TV shopping channels, corporate films and Internet commercials for various companies. More recently I have been sitting back and letting the legendary ex skater Dave Proctor to film for me and I can focus on directing.

Is it true you don’t really follow rollerblading (i.e. watch videos, read magazines etc.)?

When I was younger I bought all the magazines, videos and was clued up with everything on the scene. But I have to admit in the last 5 years that has changed on some level. I really enjoy following my friends across the UK and anyone I know abroad. If there is a UK skate DVD premier that I can’t attend I will be disappointed. But keeping up with all the different new skates and skaters around the world is not near the top of my list anymore. I then get worried and think 'I really don't care about skating anymore' then I do a soul grind then I realise 'Yeah I do!'

Who influences you with your filming?

What influences me the most is the trick and the surrounded area.

What do you hate about filming rollerblade videos?

1. I can’t skate! I film 70 % of the time I'm out street skating. I'm really looking forward to finishing the video and focusing on my skating.

2. I work in video production every day during the week so filming skating on the weekend is not much of a break.

3. Carrying equipment, how I can’t wait to come out with just my skates!

Who do you find to be the most difficult person to work with?

No one really. I mainly film my close friends so things like people being late can be forgiven. I can tell you all my friends are very easy to work with they perform anything I believe the story needs.

Wake Up was a bar raising video. I caught up with Jon Jenkins to talk about his thoughts on filming rollerblading.

What is your current video camera setup, previous and what do you expect to be using in the future?

My previous set ups were a gl1 and the gl2. Now I have the Panasonic HVX, and Canon 7d. As far as the future, I really want to mess with a 3d camera for a project of mine, although I don’t really see 3d catching on anytime soon. I do think in the future Red or the other SLR brands will have a high-speed camera released that is pro level for a reasonable price.

How did you pay for you equipment?

I paid for both camera’s doing shooting or editing work, then I got in with a group of friends who did remodeling and construction work last summer so I did that for a while.

Do you film outside of rollerblading?

Yes, me and a couple of friends from film school shoot music videos, weddings, commercials, events, and other local work. A couple months ago I shot a music video for a Vegas rapper at the Palms. Currently I am part of a small team shooting/editing a couple infomercials and a TV show on ABC called Shark Tank.

Who do you get inspiration from? Do you look outside of rollerblading?

I generally get my inspiration from a lot of friends, people, art, and music. I really like the community on Vimeo. I love when there is something new on their that will inspire me or push me to go a different direction. As far as outside of rollerblading, I really appreciate Sebastian Abes, and Jason Hernandez’s work. To me, those guys really push it.

What do you love about filming rollerblading?

I like the pay off when you have been sitting in a cramped up spot or are on your knees on hot asphalt for an hour filming something that both you and the skaters are going to be equally as juiced on. I also really like that with what you put out it can set the standard or raise the bar. I really want to start to influence the industry and other media outlets to come correct and put out real quality content that makes rollerblading and our image look strong. Right now 80 percent of the stuff you see online is crap. It really makes us look bad and I would hope that people can get their act together and take more pride in how the present things. Things need to look uniform and go in a certain direction.

What do you hate about filming rollerblading?

I hate having your heart set on getting a particular clip at a certain spot or at during the magic hour and then you get kicked out, or the person gets hurt or decides to give up. I also don’t like when people are lagging, but with the skaters I choose to skate with, that is not happening much. I also wish there was pay, so that I wouldn’t have to bust my ass to pay bills and try to keep up and get new equipment at the same time. One more thing is driving, it sucks when you have a bunch of skaters in your car smoking cigarettes, in your backseat with their blades on, leaving all kinds of trash in there, searching for the perfect spot, and driving far.

What videos are you looking forward to?

I look forward to seeing the Valo video that Ivan is doing. He does really clean work so I think that it will be an amazing video if it tops the last one, which it should.

How do you motivate people to film? Do you ever make a massive effort to go somewhere and then just have everyone sleep in?

The only time that happens is when we go to California. I’m not too sure what it is about that place. It seems like there is so many spots but most of the people that live there are just over it and not on the same page as we are when we go out there. Either that or the other people that are dedicated just aren’t hitting me up. Sometimes things go good but as of recently, I’ve really grown to expect to get only a couple shots when I go out there.

24p, 30p or 60p?

I think they all have their place and time. For outside of skating stuff I am usually shooting 24p. Shooting 60p is cool too but I think that’s been beat down and overdone now, but it can be really good with the right placement or used in the right way.

Its safe to say this is the best UK rollerblading video there ever has been. I think its Sim Warrens manga opus (rollerblading wise). Getting this online was a pain. I got the DVD from Jon Hubbard; he said it wouldn’t play, so after days of messing around with it I managed to make it work in my Mac. The secret? I cleaned it with toothpaste.

This was never properly released so enjoy.

I hate YouTube, the codec is rubbish. Vimeo is much better, but as I want to really start promoting RollCam so I think its best I also start using YouTube as well. I am in the process of uploading all my videos to YouTube. Make sure you subscribe. I have also changed the RollCam logo, no more of this rllcm business. I am in the process of migrating to this.

This is all due the DVD I am now working on. Its still in the early stages but I am going to put everything into it.
